Arenig fawr is a mountain between Trawsfyndd and Bala in Merionethshire.
In the early years of the twenthieth century it was painted repeatedly, perhaps obsessively, by J. D. Innes, a friend of Augustus John who died young in 1914. In 2014, the centenary of his death, an exhibition was held of his work, together with that of contemporary artists, all of which had a connection with Innes or his beloved mountain. This piece was one of the exhibits.
The words are the concluding couplet from an englyn (four line verse in strict metre) by Geraint Bowen (1915-2011) and freely translated, they read: Give us a share of peace/ from your spotless slopes of snow.
