This copy previously belonged to the great London art-dealer and publisher Anton Zwemmer.
The subject of nearly all of Maillol’s mature work is the female body, treated with a classical emphasis on the stable forms. The figurative style of his large bronzes is perceived as an important precursor to the greater simplifications of Henry Moore, and his serene classicism set a standard for European (and American) figure sculpture until the end of World War II.
These wonderful original lithographs from the Ovid L'Art d'Aimer (The Art of Love) suite are a testament to the beauty that the artist saw in the female form.
Printed in either sanguine or black, the simplicity of colour balance wonderfully with the nature of the image and subtle marks and details that Maillol wants you to see.
