Orion (Capricornus)
Original wood engraving.
This engraving shows Orion, apparently without his belt and with a club instead of a sword. As a hunter he is often shown surrounded by dogs and animals.
In Ravilious' preface he explains that four of the Zodiac signs he has substituted for more interesting constellations outside the Belt. He goes on to say that "There does seem to be little justification for bringing Orion, Pegasus, Andromeda and Septentarius to earth in their place since they are as much indication of their period in the year as the traditional symbols."
The engravings were cut at the time when Ravilious and Bawden had just started on their two years' work on the Morley College mural and some of the imagery is found in both projects. A number of the engravings in the suite feature backgrounds of the Sussex Downs including the Wilmington Long Man.
