Femme Couchée

Lithograph editioned specially for the Toulouse-Lautrec Circle of London in a limited edition of 1250 copies only and issued in November 1969 on specially watermarked paper with the official blind stamp.

Between the years 1892 and 1895 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec insinuated himself in the brothels of Paris. In a series of ten lithographs published under the title Elles – ‘them’, the women of the night – he depicted their lives at their most tender and unglamorous: at their toilette, reclining in exhaustion and waiting in anticipation; the unerotic monotony of the in-between hours.
