Red, Green and Brown

Paper collage.

A hitherto unseen Davison collage, previously in the possession of Julian Spalding who acquired them directly from the artist.
Art historian Spalding was a close friend and confidante of Davison. He organised the 1982 Hayward exhibition of Davison's work and catalogued the estate.
The work of Francis Davison was never meant to be easy. In execution, the artist limited himself to the purism of found paper, cut or torn and never painted. In interpretation, he insisted at his only major lifetime exhibition that his work be hung untitled, unattributed, and without description. His tremendous personal shyness seeped into his exquisite collages, and it is only with time and contemplation that they begin to reward with their own peculiar, hidden resonances.
