Funny Valentine
Acrylic on carved oak; an offcut from a friend of Wenham's workshop.
The words are from the show song My Funny Valentine by Lorenzo Hart (1895-1943); music by Rochard Rodgers.
The first jazz record Martin ever bought (as a teenager) was a compilation which included Gerry Mulligan's haunting, breathy baritone sax improvisation on the melody of this song, and that performance has stayed with Martin ever since. This piece is a tribute to the 'other half' of the Rodgers and Hart collaboration. Lorenz Hart had in many ways a tragic life and this is a small memorial to his great talent as a lyracist.
Featured in Martin Wenham: The Art of Letter Carving in the Wood, by Martin Wenham, 2022.
