As a boy, I wasn't allowed comics, and had to wait until I was 50 when my son Louis shared his weekly Beano with me! Dennis the Menace and his dog Gnasher were firm favourites. When I found this piece of rusty, curved metal, with its jagged teeth, I thought of Gnasher giving one of his trademark smiles. The only head of correct size and posture was this. Likewise, the appropriate body to accept such a head was in my "bird bodies" tray. Thus Gnasher took on a new life. ................as a scary bird!
