Stamp Design XIII
Signed in the plate lithographic print, after unpublished sketches Cocteau made for the concept of stamps.
Published in 1979 by Editions Sciaky in an edition of 600.
In the early 1960s Mario Sciaky had an idea to launch a campaign with a simple device of a stamp on the back of an envelope. That stamp would carry the message "We Believe in Europe"...Three million stamps were distributed through this effort.
In 1961 Cocteau offered his talents for the campaign that Sciaky started and created a magnificent set of drawings. The campaign ended shortly after and thus Cocteau's "stamps" went unpublished...until 1979, when Sciaky sought the permission of the Cocteau Estate so create this stunning portfolio of lithographs and two full pages of the stamps.
