Many Waters
English oak; a discarded offcut from a friend's workshop.
The lettering is the first use of an italic alphabet designed to emphasize movement and rhythm. the shape of the wood is exactly as Wenham received it. It seemed to suit these words particularly well because, like love, the shape doesn't conform to any rules, but is simply itself.
The words are from the bible: Song of Songs Chapter 8, verse 7.
Featured in Martin Wenham: The Art of Letter Carving in the Wood, by Martin Wenham, 2022.
A free copy of Martin Wenham’s new book Martin Wenham The Art of Letter Carving, published by Crowood Press (price £25), will accompany each purchase from the exhibition.
