Portrait Imaginaire - 26.3.69. II

Original lithograph on Arches paper after Pablo Picasso. From the portfolio Portraits Imaginaire (Imaginary Portraits). In January 1969, at the age of 87, Picasso received a shipment of painting supplies packed with sheets of brown corrugated cardboard. Inspired by these 'blank canvases' Picasso set about painting a series of imaginary portraits over the next four months in simple brilliant colours, many referring back to Picasso’s own earlier images: Balzac, Shakespeare and the dandies of 17th century Holland.

Interested in having these works interpreted through another medium Picasso contacted the renowned lithographer Marcel Salinas; there followed a year of close collaboration culminating in this suite of twenty nine lithographs. Picasso supervised the project closely printing only taking place when each proof had received his 'bon à tirer' (good to pull).

This print is hand numbered and signed in the plate as it appears on the original gouache and blind stamped verso (Lithographie exécutée par M Salinas d'après une peinture sur carton de Picasso).

The edition of 500 consisted of 250 for distribution in France and 250 for the rest of the world. This image is from the rest of the world edition, numbered in pencil bottom left.
