In several multimedia prints he used montage (a favourite of the sport film) to juxtapose sporting reportage with images of sexual or violent implication. In Sport, the combination of ‘60s reclining model with triumphant goal-scoring drew uncomfortable attention to the leering, hyper-macho hooliganism – dubbed from as early as the 1960s the ‘English Disease’ – that would metastasise into the performative ‘Lad’ culture of the 1990s.
