The Rape of the Sabines became the defining theme of Richards' post-war period. This classical episode, revisited in the ancient literature by Plutarch, Livy and Ovid and long the subject of Western painting, produced a prolific outpouring of paintings that quickly culminated in an exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in 1948.
