"During the summer of 1947, Braque had gone to Avignon for the exhibition Peintures et sculptures contemporaines organised by Christian and Yvonne Zervos at the Palace of the Popes, and it was there, that the meeting of the painter and poet took place, which led to the illustration of Le soleil des eaux. Braque would later illustrate several of René Char's texts."
